The Final Chapters

What a hard thing it is to pick my favorite verse from the final chapters of The Book of Mormon and expound on it for the blog. Should I quote the last few verses of chapter 7 about faith, hope and charity and how "charity is the pure love of Christ and who is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him." There could hardly be better advice than that.

Or should I talk about one of my favorite scriptures of all time in verse 48. For those who feel they should have more charity but don't, how do they achieve it? "Pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love.." The answer is right there.

But then there's the advice in chapter 9 about not giving up on others, even if it seems hopeless.
"And now, my beloved son, notwithstanding their hardness, let us labor diligently; for if we should cease labor, we should be brought under condemnation." You never stop trying with loved ones - even if they don't change, at least you can take comfort in the fact you'd tried our hardest.

Of course, chapter 10, the final chapter is filled with pearls of wisdom. There's the promise of Moroni in verse 4 that if we read and then ask the Lord if this scripture is true, "if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost." It's a simple promise, easy to understand, and yet entire talks could be given about each phrase of that verse. It's a promise I've put to the test and received an answer.

As powerful as verse 4 is, there's so much to learn from the remainder of the chapter. There are the inspiring verses that tell us that the Lord give each of us special gifts. We should consider what our special gifts are and use them to build the kingdom.

Verse 23 really stuck me. "If ye have faith ye can to all things which are expedient unto me."
Now, that's a promise that gives me hope I can accomplish whatever of the Lord wants of me.

However, I think verse 32 really hits the nail on the head with the primary message of the Book of Mormon. "Yea, come unto Christ and be perfected in him and deny yourselves of all ungodliness." That's what all the other verses are leading us to do - to come unto Christ. After all, the Book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ.

But finally, the thought hits me that I don't have to choose just one verse to talk about in my blog post. There's nothing that says I can't mention all of them that I like, so I did.

What a blessing it has been to read the Book of Mormon with the youth of our ward. I'm so gratified at the testimonies our young people have of this great scripture. I, along with so many of you, bear testimony of its truthfulness and leave that with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Moroni 9:25

"...may Christ lift thee up..."
Isn't that just great? The power of God, and of the priesthood, and of the whisperings of the Holy Ghost- through them, Christ can lift you up! It made me so happy watching the Bishop's video of Book of Mormon interviews, and how many people said, when they were sad, they turned to the scriptures. It's a very smart thing to do, because as Moroni said, Christ can lift us up. The Book of Mormon is called Another Testament of Jesus Christ, which would lead me to believe it can lift me up, if Christ can! I have now read the Book of Mormon all the way through 4 times, and I know the positive impact it can have in my life, and that it is the word of God. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Moroni's Challenge

What a great experience this has been, reading the Book of Mormon on my own for the first time. It has been a great blessing and I have felt the spirit stronger in my life. Anyway, the final scripture I wanted to share is found in the last chapter of the book of Moroni, in verse 4.

Moroni says: I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost.

I would like to challenge all of you, if you have not already, to pray to Heavenly Father and ask if the Book of Mormon is true. I know and bear my testimony that he will answer your prayers. I have a testimony of the truthfullness of the scriptures and I know they are the word of God. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior, and that the time is soon at hand that he will come again. I know that he knows us and loves us each individually, and that he knows and understands our hopes and problems. I am so thankful for the example of all the prophets and heroes of the Book of Mormon. I am especially thankful to have the gospel and to be a member in this Latter-Day church. I know that through Jesus Christ and the Atonement we are able to live with our Father in Heaven again. And this I leave you with in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Until We Meet

I am very touched by Moroni's final comments in Ether chapter 12. I think he presumed this would be the last message from him in the Book of Mormon - mostly because he himself writes in Moroni chapter 1 that "I had supposed not to have written more." But he goes on to say that he had not yet perished so he would write a bit more.

So Moroni's message in at the end of Ether 12 is very powerful. It's as if he is talking right to us He bids farewell "until we shall meet before the judgement seat of Christ. And then shall ye know that I have seen Jesus, and that he hath talked with me face to face."

If anyone has any doubts about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and Moroni's testimony he tells we will all find out at that time that he was telling the truth. I look forward to that day when I can meet Moroni and hear his testimony from his own lips and perhaps express to him my eternal gratitude for the role he played in compiling that great book of scripture that has blessed my life so much. I KNOW it's true, and I add my witness and invitation to his: "And, now I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written." in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Moroni 7:19 & 22

(Verse 19) "Search dilligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil." I think that's pretty good, straightforward advice. It gets even better when, in verse 22, it says, "In Christ there should come every good thing." So, when you look for answers or guidance in Christ's light, you'll know good from evil. And that good will be extra good, because every good thing comes from Christ. And you just chose Christ's good. So, you're pretty much set. Obviously, you have some trials, but Heavenly Father knows you can handle them, and eventually, good things will come. I would like to bear my testimony of these things, and of the entire Book of Mormon. I know that it is true, and I'm so grateful that the bishop was inspired to have us do this blog. And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Charity Never Faileth

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is greatest of all, for all things must fail- But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.

-Moroni 46-47

I have often heard the phrase 'Charity never faileth' in conference talks and Sunday School lessons, but I never knew where it came from. Well, now I know. Anyway, these two verses are pretty powerful and contain a lot of good doctrine. The very first thing Moroni tells us (before he even shares what charity is) is that if we don't strive to have charity, we are nothing. He then goes on to say that charity is the pure love of Christ and that charity never faileth. And whoso possesses it at the last day, it shall be well with him. So how do we know when we have obtained charity? Well, I think we'll know we possess charity when we are as close to Christ's example as we can be. When we are able to love others for who they are and not judge them by their past transgressions. When we are willing to do anything to help others when they are in need. And if we have been and still are obedient and loyal to our Heavenly Father. That is when we'll know.

I have a testimony in these things and I know that they are the truth. I know that Moroni was inspired to write these words about charity for a reason. I know that President Monson is a true prophet and that he is called of God. I know that Jesus is the Christ and that he atoned for our sins. I believe that The Book of Mormon is true and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

It Shall Come in a Day When ...

I was amazed this week reading how the prophecies of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon are happening. Mormon 8 has a lot of them. First there are the natural disasters:

"Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be heard of fires, and tempests, and vapors of smoke in foreign lands. And there shall also be heard of wars, rumors of wars, and earthquakes in divers places. Yea, and it shall come in a day when there shall be great pollutions up the face of the earth."

I think of the news we've reported just recently - the tsunami and earthquake in Japan that killed so many people. The recent tornados - 1,032 of them reported in April alone. The worst April on record before that the worst was 267 back in 1974. Normally a handful of people die per month in tornados. 875 lost their lives in April.

Another part of the chapter says the Book of Mormon will come in a day when some will say it's okay to do anything you want and Lord will uphold you at the last day. It also says there will be murders and lying and whoredoms and all manner of abominations. We are certainly seeing plenty of that too.

The fulfilling of these Book of Mormon prophecies is just one more indication of its truthfulness.

Ether 12:27

And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

This is such a powerful scripture that really explains a lot about why we have weaknesses and trials. The verse states that Heavenly Father gave us weaknesses so that we may humble ourselves before him. Also, weaknesses and trials provide a way to build our faith in the Lord and challenge us in life. But in order for us to strengthen the weaknesses we have, we must work diligently to try to fix our problems that we face. I believe that if we have faith in Heavenly Father and his power, he will help guide us through our trials. I know that these things are true and that we have weaknesses for a reason. I know that Jesus is the Christ and that he set the perfect example for us. I have a testimony of repentance and forgiveness, and I know that we must all forgive each other for the wrongs we have committed. I know that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet called of God and I am thankful for his example as well. I know that the scriptures are the word of the Lord and that they are true. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thou Are a Sober Child

I am amazed at the great confidence Ammaron had in Mormon when Mormon was only ten years old to tell him about the golden plates and trust that Mormon would remember to dig up the golden plates when he was 24 and take charge of them. But then Mormon was apparently an incredible young person to be made head of the Nephite armies at just 15 years old - the age of the teachers quorum in our ward. But then Joseph Smith was just 14 when he had the first vision.

It just shows us that the Lord can use faithful young people to carry out his work.

Mormon 9:26 and 28

Verse 26 says, "And now, behold, who can stand against the works of the Lord? Who can deny his sayings?" When I'm not standing up for things that are right, to me, that's denying Him and the guidance He's given us. If we go forward with faith and truly apply the sayings of our Lord, whether through scripture or modern revelation, we will be examples of Him, instead of offenders.

Verse 28 says,"Be wise in the days of your probation." Pretty straightforward, right? As I said earlier, we need to go forward with faith. It also always helps when we look at things with eternal perspective. As the verse said, these are days of probation. Our life here on earth is only temporary! I like to think of it as going on a trip somewhere special, like, say, Hawaii. Usually, the trip would be 1-2 weeks long, and you're going to cram as many cool and fun things to do and places to see as you can, not just lay around, watch TV in your hotel room, and text your friends. Our life here on earth is the same way! In eternal timing, this life is very short. We shouldn't just waste this precious opportunity doing useless, or even harmful, things.
I would like to bear my testimony of living the gospel and not just going through the motions, how it positively it affects my life! And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Turn the Heart of the Children to the Fathers

One of the scriptures the Savior quotes during his visit to the Nephites is comes from Malachi:

"And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."

In recent months I am seeing more an more how this prophecy is being fulfilled, even with the youth of our ward. When I see the young people turning out in large numbers for baptisms for the dead, I see the heart of the children turning to their fathers - to those who are dead that have gone before them and need these saving ordinances.

When I hear about the young men and women in our ward going monthly with their families or weekly with their friends on their own to the temple , often in the early morning hours before school, I see the heart of the children turning to their fathers.

When I see people starting to go weekly to the temple, who used to only go each month or just a few times a year, I see the heart of the children turning to their fathers.

The increased fulfilling of this prophecy must be pleasing to the Lord and I'm so pleased members of the Shamrock Park Ward are helping to make it happen.

Do all Things in Worthiness

I just wanted to start by wishing everyone a happy Mother's Day. I am so thankful for my mother and for all she does for me and my family.

Well, the scripture of this week that really stood out to me is found in Mormon 9, verse 29. It states- See that ye are not baptized unworthily; see that ye partake not of the sacrament of Christ unworthily; but see that ye do all things in worthiness, and do it in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God; and if ye do this, and endure to the end, ye will in nowise be cast out.

The reason I chose to blog about this scripture is because it's essential to our eternal salvation that we are worthy to perform and participate in ordinances of the gospel. If we are not worthy to enter the temple or be baptized, we won't be able to have our sins washed away or have an eternal marriage. And if we don't have these things, we will not have the opportunity to receive eternal life.

The verse also says that we should do all things in Jesus' name. This is another important thing because everything must be performed in the name of the Savior in order for them to be true. That is why we bless the sacrament and other ordinances in the name of Jesus Christ.

This scripture also includes that we must endure to the end. So if we do all things in worthiness, if we do all things in the name of Jesus Christ, and endure to the end, we won't be cast out of the presence of the Lord. I have a testimony of these things and I know that they are true; I say them in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

3 Nephi 27:28

"....whatsoever things ye shall ask the Father in my name shall be given unto you." I thought this was a great verse, and especially fitting for fast Sunday. I would like to share my testimony that the Lord does hear and answer our prayers if we truly have the desire and faith. He knows each and every one of us and is aware of our needs. He sends people into our lives who are acting on inpsiration to answer our prayers, and we do the same for others. I say these things in the name of Jesus Chirst, Amen.

Easter

As Andrea mentioned, those of us who have been keeping up on reading two pages a day in the Book of Mormon found ourselves reading about the visit of the Savior to America right at the Easter season. President Turley challenged me in my last interview with him to student that last week of the Savior's life leading up to the resurrection. As I did so I realized the Bible is largely silent about what happened on that Saturday between the crucifixion and the resurrection. But as I studied I became aware that one of the things Christ did while his body lay in the tomb in Jerusalem was visit his children on the American continent. He didn't show himself to them yet, but they heard his voice. We read in 3rd Nephi chapter 9 that while the people around Zarahemla were wandering around stunned in the darkness after earthquakes and fires and other natural disasters that the voice of Jesus Christ was heard by them saying, "behold, I ma Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are." It made me realize that Jesus loves all his people. My study of the events leading up to that first Easter have increased my appreciation for and testimony of our Savior.

3 Nephi 15:9

This verse truly, is one of my favorite scriptures. This is Christ speaking to the people in the Americas as he teaches them the gospel. The reason I really love this scripture is because it is still very important to us today and still applies in our lives. He says to them: Behold, I am the law, and the light. Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live; for unto him that endureth to the end will I give eternal life.

For we, in order to receive eternal life, must be baptized and have the gift of the Holy Ghost bestowed upon us. We must be worthy, by obeying the commandments and living the gospel to recieve our endowments in the temple. We need to be sealed to our spouse and family in the temple. And finally, we all must endure to the end.

I am so thankful that it is Easter today and that we have been able to celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection. I know that because of him we will all be able to be resurrected one day. I know that he is the Savior and Redeemer of this world. I am so thankful for his willingness to sacrifice for us in Gethsemane so that we would be able to repent and live with him and Heavenly Father again. I know that this is the true church and that the scriptures are true. I am so thankful that we will be able to attend the temple as a youth body this Thursday and partake of the eternal blessings offered there. I know that we have a true prophet here on Earth, Thomas S. Monson. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

His Sheep

It was very fitting that throughout this past Easter week, in my scripture reading, I happened to be at the part in 3rd Nephi where Christ comes to the Americas. I noticed one day as I was reading that he often refers to us as His sheep, with Him as our shepherd. I found that so comforting.
In 3 Nephi 15:21, Christ was telling the people, "Other sheep have I not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." Isn't it so nice to know that our Savior is aware of each and every one of us and our needs? He wants every one of His sheep in His fold because each of us are valuable children of God. "They shall hear my voice, and shall be numbered among my sheep." (16:3) I know that my Redeemer lives, and that He knows and loves me. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

O That We Had Repented

It was interesting to me as I read 3rd Nephi chapter 8 how the Lord comes through with his promises when it comes to both blessings and cursings. When the great destructions in the 3rd Nephi come to pass it's only then that the people wish they had repented. But it was a case of too little too late. And yet we read in chapter 10 verse 14 where it says that "he that hath the scriptures, let him search them because all of these deaths".. . were a fulfillment of prophecy.

What can we learn for our day. I think people, likewise, are ignoring the consequences of poor decisions. Then when those consequences hit they wish they had repented. It's my hope that none of us will be in that position - that we will chose the right and let the positive consequences follow.

Did Not Sin Ignorantly

We learn in 3 Nephi chapter 5, how after the Lord helped the Nephites destroy the
Gadianton robbers that the people were so humbled and grateful that "there was not a living soul among all the people who did doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets."(chapter 5 verse 1). We go on to read that, "they did forsake all their sins, and their abominations, and did serve God with all diligence day and night." (verse 3).

What righteous people they were - all of them. And yet we turn the page (seven years later) and we read that the majority gave in to the temptations of the devil and "did not sin ignorantly, for they knew the will of God concerning them, for it had been taught to them; therefore they did willfully rebel against God."(2 Nephi 6:18)

There are two lessons I take away from these verses for our day. First, like the Nephites, if we sin we do it willfully because we've been taught better and are under greater responsibility and thus greater condemnation if we sin. Second, I'm amazed at how quickly these people who had
such great testimonies (remember they did not doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets) fell away and fell to temptation.

It makes me realize that we have to work on our spirituality every day. But I also know that when we do that is when we feel the greatest peace and happiness.

3 Nephi 9:14

Yea, verily I say unto you, if ye will come unto me ye shall have eternal life. Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I recieve; and blessed are those who come unto me. What a unique scripture this is of how we must come unto Jesus. That if we come unto him he will extend his arm of mercy to us and will grant us eternal life. Through him we will all be blessed and we can inherit the kingdom of God. He is the light and life of the world. He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. The Father and the son, our savior and redeemer. He healed the sick, the dead he raised, he suffered the attonement willingly and died for us on Calvary's Hill. It is not just our responsibility to come unto Jesus Christ alone. We have been challenged to invite all to come unto him so that they may also partake of the many marvelous blessings he bestows upon us. For it is his work and his glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. And the only way for this to happen is to be missionaries and invite, invite, invite all to come unto Christ the Savior. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

3 Nephi 3:14

"...he caused that fortifications should be built round about them, and the strength thereof should be exceedinlgy great." I think we all should 'cause exceedingly great fortifications' to be built in our own lives. At General Conference, we were, as always instructed to pray often, study our scriptures, and bear our testimonies. We wouldn't be getting told this all the time if it weren't important! These are our latter-day fortifications, and we want them to be as strong as possible so we can stand as witnesses of God.

Wickedness Never Was Happiness

The scripture I want to comment on is similar to the famous "wickedness never was happiness" quote from Alma. Another witness of that theme comes in slightly different words but a similar meaning in Helamn 13:38:

"... And ye have sought for happiness in doing iniquity, which thing is contrary to the nature of that righteousness which is in our great and Eternal Head."

Don't we see this in the world today? People think that immorality, drugs or other sins will bring them happiness. There may be some momentary pleasure, but it doesn't bring real, lasting happiness - in fact, it usually brings sorrow and misery. I have a strong testimony that the one and only path to true happiness lies in living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Helaman 13:29

"...how long will ye choose darkness rather than light?" That is a very good question. A lot of times, doing spiritual things like studying the scriptures and watching conference may not seem very interesting. But the way I like to think of it is, that even if it's not necessarily interesting, it's in your best interest to do it. Our life here on Earth won't last forever, and we need to actually be able give ourselves credit for trying, and being examples of the believers, and being member missionaries. In our little everyday decisions of whether or not to pray, or study our scriptures, and so much more, we are choosing- either darkness or light.

And Thus We See

It's good for us to try to spot the lessons the experiences of the people in the Book of Mormon teach us. In several parts the author helps us along by telling us, "and thus we see." In other words, "here's the point of the story and the lesson to be learned." One of those is in Helamn 3:27.

"And thus we may see that the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon his holy name."

The previous chapters talk about how the people we blessed after turning to the Lord after being humbled by wars. The point of including that experience of the people in the Book of Mormon is to teach us the lesson of verse 27.

And it's just as true today. We may not have been faced the wars and trails the Nephites faces, but if we pray to the Lord with a sincere heart, with real intent, he will year and answer our prayers, just as he did for the Nephites.

Baptisms for the Dead

...For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, as Paul says concerning the fathers- that they without us cannot be made perfect-neither can we without our dead be made perfect.
-Doctrine & Covenants 128:15

This is one of my favorite scriptures that really testifies how important it is for us to attend the temple as often as possible. I know that anyone who hasn't been baptized and confirmed, sealed to their family, recieved their endowments, or recieved the Melchizedek Priesthood (If able)will not be able to recieve eternal life. That is why it is essential for our ancestors who have passed on to have us represent them in the temple and do these ordinances in their behalf. For without us they cannot be made perfect in the sight of the Lord. I know that our regular attendence at the temple is important for our salvation as well. When we enter the temple and put on our white temple clothes, we are promising to leave behind our troubles and become pure like unto our garments. The temple is one of the only places that the devil's influence cannot enter. The spirit is so over whelming that you are on the verge of tears as you sit and ponder how many people gave all that they had to join the church and travel westward to start the Lord's work in what we know as Salt Lake City today. And to think how blessed we are to have a temple only five miles away from our homes. So many members of the church in other countries have to save money their whole lives just to attend the temple once. Some never get the oppurtunity. Going to the temple is our chance to read the scriptures and pray to Heavenly Father without distractions. I know that the temple is the Lord's holy house and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Alma 62:21 nad 26

Verse 21 talks about the Nephites encircling the Lamanites while they were asleep. In verse 26, it explains that the Nephites now "had possession" of their city. Even though we aren't in war, we need to keep our guard up. If we allow ourselves to "fall asleep" spiritually, we will also be taken captive. We will lose our testimonies, just as the Lamanites lost their cities. I know that reading the Book of Mormon daily strengthens me and my testimony, and that it will do the same to everyone else. And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Moroni 7:29

"...Have miracles ceased? Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither have angels ceased to minister unto the children of men." I believe in miracles. Every day of our lives. If we look for them, they are there. In the flutter of butterfly wings, the perfect innocence of an infant, the joy in friendship and sisterhood, the magic of Christmas, the quiet answered prayer, I see miracles. I believe in angels. Literal messengers from heaven. If we look for them, they are there. In the warmth of an embrace, the wiping away of tears, whether it is a Celestial body clothed in white, or the face of my mother, I see angels.

Interesting Contrast

I gained some new insight into a verse near the very end of Alma. I find it interesting what a contrast there is in the two reactions of the Nephites to the long war with the Lamanites. In Alma 62:40 we read:

"But behold, because of the exceedingly great length of the war between the Nephites and the Lamanites many had become hardened because of the exceedingly great length of the war; and many were softened because because of their afflictions, insomuch that they did humble themselves before God, even in the depth of humility."

Interesting is the contrast of the reaction of different people to the same set of circumstances. The war cause some to become hardened and others to humble themselves before God. What lesson can we learn from this in our day? I think this verse teaches us that we can let afflictions either turn us away from God or turn us more towards him. It is my prayer that we will turn to God in times of affliction and become stronger because of it.

Helaman 4:24

This is my scripture of the week that I wanted to share here on the blog. This phrase is found throughout The Book of Mormon, D&C, and the Old and New Testiment. The message is that the spirit of God dwelleth not in unholy temples. That is why it is so important for us to remain faithful and true so that Heavenly Father's spirit can be with us. He is our father and our creator. He is the one that parted the red sea and made the exodus of Egypt possible. He is the one where all blessings come from. He is the one who made it possible for Nephi to slay Laban. He is the one who protected the 2,000 stripling warriors of Helaman and allowed none to die. He is the one from whom the prophet recieves revalation. He is the one we pray to in the name of the savior each day. He is the one who knows everything about us and loves us with all his might. He is the only one, true, almighty God of us all. And as long as we are righteous he will dwell within us. This is my testimony, and I say it in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Faith

I recently read Either chapter 12. I love it. Moroni states in verse 6, "I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith."

Sometimes, when faced with a decision or when I'm about to act on an impression, I just wish I could see the outcome -- that I could know how things will end up, or that everything is going to work out. But if the Lord always showed us the path from the beginning to the end, then that would take away our chance to exercise faith.

Alma and Amulek didn't know that the prison would tumble to the ground and they would walk out alive and free (vs 13). Nephi and Lehi didn't know that the Lamanites would indeed change their hearts and become converted (vs 14). Ammon and the sons of Mosiah didn't know that they would see such great miracles come to pass among the Lamanite people (vs. 15). "and neither at any time hath any wrought miracles until after their faith" (vs 18).

I have had numerous experiences where I wanted to keep the commandments, but I didn't know how it would work out. For example in choosing not to work on a school project on Sunday, or choosing to read my scriptures in the morning even when I was tired and my time to study for an exam was limited, or choosing to leave the theater even though all of my friends stayed. Would I get the project done? Would I pass the test? Would my friends still talk to me?

All I can say is that in every case the Lord has stepped in and taken care of me. He has far exceeded any expectations, and through His power I was given the strength I needed. I have seen miracles come to pass. I know with all my heart that the same Lord who tumbled down the walls of the prison, who parted the Red Sea, who shut the mouths of lions, is the same Lord who will stand by us today. It takes faith in Him. We have to believe that He is there, that He is able, and that He will even work miracles for US! And He will... after the trial of our faith.

It Mattereth Not; I Am Not Angry

I am always amazed when I read Pahoran's reply to Moroni's scathing epistle to him. As wonderful a man as Moroni was, he was very passionate and, in this case, his passion caused him to come to the wrong conclusion. Moroni assumes that since Parhoran as the governor is not sending more food and men to Moroni's struggling army that Pahoran is neglecting them. Moroni threatens that he will come and take down Pahoran and the government and accuses him of being a traitor.

Little does Moroni know that Pahoran is being attack by rebel Nephites and is on the run and in no position to help out. After being falsely accused by Moroni, Pahoran has every right to be angry with Moroni. But instead what does he say? In Moroni 61:9 he says:

"And now, in your epistle you have censured me, but it mattereth not; I am not angry, but do rejoice in the greatness of your heart."

What an amazing response! We can all take a lesson about forgiveness from Pahoran. Not only does he not get angry at Moroni, he actually praises him for the greatness of his heart. We would all be better off if, when we may have reason to be mad at someone for what they did to us, just forgive and say "it mattereth not (it doesn't really matter)."

Oaths and Covenants

(Alma 62:16)... they[ the Nephites] caused them[ the Lamanites] to enter into a covenant that they would no more take up their weapons of war against the Nephites. (Alma 62:17) And when they had entered into this covenant they sent them to dwell with the people of Ammon, and they were in number about four thousand who had not been slain.

I just found it remarkable that back then someone could make an oath and no matter what, they would stay true to their word. Like this instance, the Lamanites make an oath that they will not fight against the Nephites, the Nephites let them go and the Lamanites don't try to attack them any longer. We just don't have this in our world today, people cheat, they lie, they break promises, they take advantage of others, but it is our responsibility to be the example for our fellow men by not doing the things which are dishonest. It is my testimony that if we all remained faithfull to our word and helped guide others along their way, we would all be blessed and would't have to bear the grief of being cheated. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

And They Are Happy

I had the opportunity last week of performing my first marriage as bishop. A wedding is a celebration and I was happy to be a part of it. I was able to search the scriptures and the words of the modern-day prophets to find words of advice and encouragement for the new couple.

Then I thought that I may at some time be in a position to conduct a funeral. I wondered what words of encouragement to give the grieving family. What scriptures might help in that occasion?

I found one this week in the so-called "war chapters" of Alma. It talked about how the army of Antipus was so glad to be joined by the army of Helaman because Antipus' army "had been reduced by the Lamanites because their forces had slain a vast number of our men, for which we have cause to mourn." Then here is the verse that stood out to me in Alma 56:11:

"Nevertheless, we may console ourselves in this point, that they have died in the cause of their country and of their God, year, and they are happy."

While it is appropriate to mourn when we lose loved ones, as did the Nephites, we too can console ourselves that, the person who died is happy if they lived a righteous life. It also gives me motivation to live a life in the service of God so when the time comes I will be prepared.

Sometimes We Stand Alone

In Mormon 8, we learn that Mormon the prophet has been killed by the Lamanites and that Moroni is left behind to tell the "sad tale of the destruction of [his] people". He says "I even remain alone" (vs.3), "whither I go it mattereth not" (4), "I am alone. My father hath been slain in battle and all my kinsfolk, and I have not friends nor whither to go..." (5).

I think these are some of the lonelinest verses in all of scripture. I can't imagine losing all of my family, and not having any friends. I can't imagine not knowing what is going to happen to me and being surrounded by enemies seeking my life. Yet he moved forward in faith and finished his work. His final touches at the end of the Book of Mormon include some of the most moving passages in the Book of Mormon; he included the story of Ether and the Brother of Jared. He taught us about charity, using the spirit in making decisions, the gifts of the Spirit, the words of the Sacrament prayers, what it takes to be perfected in Christ. And yet he was alone. Hopelessly alone.

I think in our lives we are constantly faced with choices: do I go with the flow of what every one else is doing? Do I follow my friends into this movie? Do I sit in silence listening to a teacher talk critically about our religion? Do I allow others to cheat off my paper? Do I stay at this party? OR do I take a stand? Do I speak up? Do I turn around and walk away? Even if it means that I stand alone?

I hope that as we face these decisions, we will remember Moroni, who stands majestically atop our temples, yet he stands up there alone. God has a work for us too. Doing what is right is not always easy or popular, but we will never regret walking the straight and narrow path. Jesus Christ walked the lonelinest of roads so that we do not have to walk alone. He will walk beside us even when there is no one else.

Whatever Happened to Coriaton?

I came across an interesting passage in the Book of Mormon tonight that answered a question I had been wondering about. You'll recall in Alma, chapter 39 Alma chastises his son Corianton for breaking the law of chastity. Corianton was on a mission, but had gone after the harlot Isabel. Alma let his son know how serious his sin was, and told him to repent and forsake his sins. He let him know how his actions had damaged the missionary work there. It's quite a powerful chapter about sin and forgiveness and repentance, and I'd always wondered what happened to Corianton and if he had repented.

Tonight I found the answer in a verse I hadn't really noticed before and it made me happy. Alma 49:30 says:

"Yea, and there was continual peace among them, and exceedingly great prosperity in the church because of their heed and diligence which they gave unto the word of God, which was delcared unto them by Helaman, and Shiblon, and Corianton, and Ammon and his brethern, yea, and by all those who had been ordained by the holy order of God, being baptized unto repentance, and send forth to preach among the people."

There was my answer. Corianton must have repented! It is encouraging to know that even if a person commits a serious sin, they can turn turn their lives around and again be useful servants of the Lord. It's all part of the atonement and the miracle of forgiveness.

Alma 48:16

"...his heart did glory in it, not in the shedding of blood but in doing good."
Wow. How cool would it be to just glory in doing good? I think it's sort of like the happiness/joy comparison. You don't just "feel good" when you do good, you glory, you feel amazing, because you are being an instrument in the Lord's hands. Moroni is a great hero and example for all of us, and I know that if we do follow his example, we will also be able to glory in doing good.

Alma 50:20

It has been very interesting to see this scripture many times throughout the Book of Mormon as I have been reading. It is a very important for us keep in mind, for it still applies to our lives today and I know it is true.

... inasmuch as they shall keep my commandments they shall prosper in the land. But remember inasmuch as they will not keep my commandments they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.

This scripture is stated in Alma 38:1, Alma 36:30, Alma 36:1, Alma 9:13, Omni 1:6, Jarom 1:9, 2 Nephi 4:4, 2 Nephi 1:20, 1 Nephi 4:14, and 1 Nephi 2:20. So apparently this is true doctrine that the Lord wants us to remember. I have a testimony that the Book of Mormon is true. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that he is the literal son of God. I know that he will come down to the earth again at the second coming. I know that this is the restored gospel and that it is true. I know that Thomas S. Monson is our prophet today and that what he teaches is revalation from Heavenly Father. I know that Joseph Smith was a prohet and that through faith he was able to translate the Book of Mormon. I know that we can all be missionaries in this dark world today and that with the help of the Holy Ghost we are able to guide those who have fallen away from the church or have never had the gospel in their lives back to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I say these things in the Savior's name. Amen.

Being Serviceable

Last month as I was interviewing on camera some of the youth of the ward for my Book of Mormon video project, Andrea mentioned how studying the scriptures helped her want to be more "serviceable." I thought that was an interesting word - one I hadn't remembered hearing before, but a word rich in meaning.

It was interesting tonight as I was studying in Alma Chapter 48 that word popped up again. In verse 19 it says:

"Now behold Helaman and his brethren were no less serviceable unto the people than was Moroni; for they did preach the word of God, and they did baptize unto repentance all men whosoever would hearken unto their words."

It says earlier in the chapter that Moroni was "a man who did labor exceedingly for the welfare and safety of his people." The chapter goes on to describe his faithfulness and valor as a military leader. But, the author of the chapter (I assume Mormon) makes a point of saying that those who were preaching the gospel an baptizing were doing an equally great service.

Reading that and remembering Andrea's words helped me understand the meaning of the word "serviceable" a little better and inspired me to want to be more serviceable to the Lord and my fellowmen.

Alma 44:3

"And now ye see that ye cannot destroy thhis our faith."
This verse is such a wonderful reminder! No matter what everyone else is doing around us, doing to us, or saying to us, they cannot destroy our faith. Our faith and testimony is entirely our own and we should take advantage of that by standing as witnesses of God atall times, in all things, and in all places, because our faith is ours and no one can take it from us.

When Thou Risest in the Morning

Just a quick thought about a scripture I read last night. In Alma 37:37 there's the phrase:
"and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God."
Now, I had read that scripture many times before, but this time I thought to myself that I should actually DO what it said (a novel idea). So this morning when I woke up, the sun was shining through the window, I was in my warm, comfortable bed when the temperature was around five degrees outside, and I took a moment to be thankful for a new day and all my many blessings. I truly tried to to "let my heart be full of thanks unto God." It felt good, and started the day off right. Amazing how it works to actually put into practice what the scriptures tell us to do.
I hope I can do that every morning and I think I'll be a happier person because of it.

Alma 38:5

"...I would that ye should remember, that as much as ye shall put your trust in God even so much ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions, and ye shall be lifted up at the last day." This is a verse of such hope! I think we all start feeling really weighed down by our burdens every now and then, and this verse can just bring us peace. Trust in God. It's as simple as that! I think of it as sort of like those "easy buttons" they used to have in Staples commercials. Just put your trust in your God to help you out, and you'll feel a lot better!

Alma 44:3

Moroni and his followers have gone up to battle with the people of Zerahemnah (or the Lamanites) and have been fighting to keep their families alive and to save their land. Eventually the Nephites surround the Lamanites and offer them the choice of making a peace covenant with them or they can continue the battle and be slain.

That's where this verse comes in. (This scripture doesn't really have anything to do with the battle but it is a great one. So bare with me)

... And now ye see that ye cannot destroy this our faith.

I know that because of the Nephites astounding faith in the Lord, they were able to defeat the Lamanites. It is so important for us to have faith in our Savior for it is one thing that can never be taken from us. I know if we have faith in our Father in Heaven we will always be able to conquer our trials, our temptations, and the evil that is in our world today. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and I know that The Book of Mormon is true. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Pray Continually

It's been five months now since the 2 pages a day Book of Mormon challenge was issued. Those who are keeping up are at about page 300. I commend those who have kept up with the challenge. But for those who are not that far, don't give up. You will gain from just reading something each day. Studying the scriptures is a life-long pursuit. When we are done with this challenge it does not mean we are done with daily scripture study.

I was impressed with a verse I read this week in Alma 34:27. Amulek is preaching and telling the people where they should pray and what they should pray for. And then he sums it up when he says"

"Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let you hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for he welfare of those who are around you."

That doesn't mean that we walk around with our heads bowed and arms folded, but that we constantly have a prayer in our hearts. We think as we're in our homes or at at school or at work; "what can I do to help those around me? Who can I talk to so they'll have a better day?"

Also, if we constantly have a prayer in our hearts, it will be nearly impossible for Satan to be successful in tempting us to do wrong. It is my hope that we will take this advice to heart and continually have prayer in our hearts.

Alma 32:2

"...After much labor among them they began to have success..." Isn't that so true for everyone and everything? Nothing just happens. At my house, we have a quote with a picture of Jesus on it that says, "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it." This applies everywhere- schoolwork, missionary work, hobbies, self-improvement, chruch callings, you name it! Our purpose here is to learn and grow and then return to our Heavenly Father. Life is going to be hard work, so it's better sooner than later to get used to the fact we're it's going to take effort.

Alma 34:35

For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

This is a great scripture. (They all are really) It is a great gift we have been given; to be able to repent for our sins and our mistakes, and this gift is essential for us if we want to return and live with our Father and his son again. For no unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God. In order for us to be set on the right path again though, we have to follow these three steps:

Repent: We kneel down in prayer and sincerely ask our Heavenly Father to forgive us of our mistake.

Promise: We promise never to repeat the mistake we have made.

Forget: If we follow the first two steps, Heavenly Father won't hold us accountable any longer and he will forget the sin we have committed. It is our job to try our best to forget and not dwell upon what we have done in the past.

I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Exceeding Joy

I want to follow up on Andrea's post about the joy of Alma that was so great it exhausted his strength and he fell to the earth. Alma 27:18 says,

"Behold, this is the joy which none receiveth save it be the truly penitent and humble seeker of Christ."

Contrast that with Korihor just a couple chapters later. He goes around saying there is no God, and he accuses those who preach there is a God of leading away the people after silly traditions for their own gain. Korihor asks for a sign there is a God. The sign is that he is struck dumb. He then wanders around begging for food and is eventually trampled to death by the wicked Zoramites.
The moral of he story is found in Alma 30:60.

"And thus we see he end of him who perverteth the ways of the Lord; and thus we see that the devil will not support his children at the last day but doth speedily drag them down to hell."

We have the choice being like Alma and in the end experiencing inexpressible joy, or following he example of Korihor, who may have been popular for a while by following the devil, but in the end, the devil abandoned him and dragged him down to hell.

Alma 32:21 & 22

Alma, after dealing with Korihor, gets word that the Zoramites have fallen into apostacy, so he and Aaron start on a mission to convert them to the true gospel. When they arrive, they see that the people don't believe in Christ and that they have corrupted many of the true principles of the gospel. Nevertheless they begin to teach the word of God to them. They come upon a multitude of sick and poor Zoramites that have been cast out, and seeing that they have been humbled the missionaries start to preach to them. And this is a part of what they taught.

And now as I said concerning faith-faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

And now, behold, I say unto you, and I would that ye should remember, that God is merciful unto all who believe on his name; therefore he desireth, in the first place, that ye should believe, yea, even on his word.

I have faith that Heavenly Father is real and that he is the father of all our spirits. I have a testimony of our Savior. I know that Christ attoned for all our sins, and that he was crucified on Calvery. I have faith that if we have faith in our Father in Heaven, we truely will be blessed and that God will grant us mercy at the judgement seat. I know that the Book of Mormon is another testiment of Jesus Christ and I bear testimony that it is true. I now know the blessings which are given when we take the time to read and ponder the scriptures and share what the spirit has revealed to us while we read. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Alma 27:18

"Now was this not exceeding joy which none receiveth save it be the truly penitent and humble seekers of happiness?" Alma was so filled with joy that he fainted! How great would it be if we could be filled with that kind of happiness? Luckily, we can, if we do what the verse says. If we are humble and penitent, we can receive this kind of happiness! I hope we'll all do our best to achieve this joy.

Led by the Spirit of the Lord

I like the message in Alma 21:16. Ammon and Aaron and the other missionaries with them decided to preach to the Lamanites. How did they know where to go and who to preach to?
Verse 16 gives us the answer:

"And they went forth whithersoever they were led by the Spirit of he Lord, preaching the word of God ..."

That was a lesson to me about how we should live our lives. I know we can be led by the Spirit of God if we just heed the promptings we get. I had an experience once where I felt really prompted to ask a young man at my work if he planned to go on a mission. He was totally inactive and not living the gospel standards, so I felt kind of foolish asking him that question. He just looked at me funny and said he had thought about it. He soon left my work for another job but about a year later I got a letter from him. He said my comment got him thinking and he decided to get his life in order and go on a mission and he invited me to the sacrament meeting where he would be speaking. We should follow the example of the Ammon and his brethren and try to be led by the Spirit.

Alma 26: 12

Yea I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.

This is what Ammon the missionary says to Aaron, after he accuses Ammon of being too joyfull and of boasting. But anyway, I just found this verse very meaningful to me. I know that with the Lord we really can do all things as long as we are keeping the commandments and are trying our best to be like Christ. I know that we can perform miracles as long as we are intuned with the spirit and are fullfilling the covenants which we have made to our Father in Heaven. I know that I am a child of God and that he loves me and knows everything about me. I know that he loves everyone in the world just as much. I know that this book is true, and that Heavenly Father through Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and Martin Harris translated the Book of Mormon. I know that Jesus Christ lives and that he will come again at the Second Coming. I am thankful for a true prophet and apostles who lead God's church in these Latter Days. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Alma 21:22

This verse says "...they might have the liberty of worshipping the Lord their God according to their desires, in whatsoever place they were in..." Doesn't that sound very similar to the 11th Article of Faith? "We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience and allow all men the same privilege. Let them worship how, where, or what they may." In our country we have the freedom of religion. It is a great blessing to be able to do what both that scripture and the 11th Article of Faith say. We should take advantage of that and attend our church meetings, pray, and study our scirptures since we can without oppsition. Others, like Daniel, would have loved to have freddom of religion! But even though he didn't, he still prayed, even though it meant being cast into a den of lions. I think we can all sacrifice a little bit of time each day to worship our God- we could have it a lot worse!

Alma 17:12

This verse says that it "took courage...to declare unto them the Word of God." This is talking about Alma and Amulek! You know, the guys who got thrown into prison, beaten, and tried by law because they were preaching the gospel. Because we live in a free country, we won't be hurt like they were if we share the gospel with others. It's a hard and scary thing, though, to bring up the gospel in a conversation. But that's why the scripture says it takes courage! It is a hard thing to do and so we need to be like Alma and Amulek and trust in the Lord so we can share His gospel. I bear my testimony of these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

St. John 6:38

For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.

This is a great scripture for all of us, especially the men and women who are preparing to go on a mission to really ponder and think about. For it reminds me that this is how I want to be, and I want to do all that I can do to be an instrument in the Lord's hands. I have forgotten a few times, and passed up a moment that I really could've been of service to someone, but after reading this I have tried harder not to pass up such opportunities. I will try my best to act upon the Holy Ghost and to stay worthy to go to the temple. I am so thankful for this wonderful ward, and for the love and friendship we all have for each other and for the Lord, Jesus Christ. I am thankful for the watchmen we have in our lives. I believe that the bible is the word of God as far as it is translated correctly, and I truely believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Watch and Pray Continually

Alma 13:28 admonishes us to "..watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can can bear..."
I can't overemphasize how true this is. People can do so well in staying spiritually strong as they read their scriptures each day and say their prayers faithfully and that gives them the strength to stay on the right path and avoid temptation. But then comes the danger in being too overconfident and thinking your strong enough to skip those things for a few days. That's when Satan strikes and people are more likely to give in to temptation. I have a testimony that as we watch and pray continually - not taking a break from doing that - that we will indeed see the promise fulfilled that we will not be tempted above that which we can bear.

Alma 14

I am sorry for my absence in posting on the blog for the past couple of weeks. I was still kinda caught up in the holiday season, plus we still had family staying here who wanted to play games and do stuff. Anyway, this scripture that I have for you today is a great story of remaining faithful to the Lord. Because this story is a full chapter long, I will sum it up and tell it in my own words.

Alma and Amulek are commanded to preach the gospel to the people of Zeezrom. They do as they are asked. They teach the people about Jesus Christ, the plan of salvation, and they tell the people that they need to repent of their sins and quit living their lives wickedly, or the Lord will destroy them. Well, the multitude of people they were teaching, reject their words and are angry with them, and tie them up. The people then cast stones at them. They then take all the wives and children that believed the missionaries' words and cast them into the fire, along with all the records and scriptures they had. Alma is commanded of the Lord not to save the righteous people or the burning records. The angry mob then puts them in prison for three days. Once they are let out, the people try to get Alma and Amulek to deny Christ and what they believe in. The people say if they do, they will let them go. But Alma and Amulek won't deny their beliefs, so they are smote on the cheek by every one of the people who are angry with them. They continue doing this to the missionaries, and even make them take their clothes off. The people continue to mock them and give Alma and Amulek more opportunities to deny what they believe, but they still remain faithful. They receive many more beatings, until Alma prays to the Lord, asking him to give them the strength to break the bonds they are tied with. The Lord, pleased with Alma and Amulek, does, and the missionaries are able to escape.

I would like to bare my testimony of the gospel and of its truth. I know that Jesus Christ is our savior and because of him we are able to return to our Heavenly Father. I know the Book of Mormon is the true words of prophets and apostles, and that they were all inspired by the Lord to write what they wrote. I know we have a true prophet today, President Thomas S. Monson. I am thankful for the church building and for the temple we have so close to our homes. I know that our bishopric was called of God, and I am thankful for them. I am thankful for the preisthood, and for the miracles that are performed through it. I am thankful for my family, and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Alma 7:11-13, 15

Verses 11-13 describe, in short, our Savior's life, why He did what He did, and all He did for us; His example, His sacrifice, and the miracles He performed. The magnitude of what He did just touched me so deeply!
Verse 15 says, "...show unto your God that ye are willing to repent of your sins and enter into a covenant with Him to keep His commandments, and witness it unto Him this day..." Our life is filled with choices- it's what we call agency. Christ sacrificed His life for us and there's know denying it. Our choice is whether we decide to accept that and use it to help us, or if we ignore it. I know that I can be forgiven of my sins and shortcomings through my Savior Jesus Christ. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

The reward of our works

I was impressed with Andrea's previous post about how clear cut some of the Book of Mormon verses are. Here's another one - Alma 9:28:

...for the time is at hand that all men shall reap a reward of their works, according to that which they have been - if they have been righteous they shall reap the salvation of their souls, according to the power and deliverance of Jesus Christ; and if they have been evil they shall reap the damnation of the their souls, according to the power and captivation of the devil.

In other words if our works are good we'll have our reward, if they are bad, we'll suffer the consequences. Another reason to do what Andrea suggested in the last post - choose the good stuff - it's God's stuff. I like that.

Alma 5:40

"For I say unto you that whatsoever is good cometh from God, and whatsoever is evil comethe from the devil." I really liked this verse because it was so straightforward. Think of all the blessings we have, and then think of where they come from. Heavenly Father! He provides us with an opportunity to live here on earth, to live with an eternal family, to partake of the sacrament, the restored gospel, a living prophet, and so much more. I know that Heavenly Father also blesses us with challenges to help us grow. Sometimes it's hard to tell that challenges are blessings, but when we look back, we can see how they helped us. All of these good things come from God. But then, of course, we sin, and make mistakes, and those things come from Satan. But where does repentance come from? Christ's sacrifice for us, which is yet another good gift from God. So, pick the good stuff- it's God's stuff.
